Nyali MP Mohammed Ali Reveals Medical Battle That Kept Him Away From Public

After nine months of silence that sparked widespread speculation about his political future, Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has finally revealed the harrowing health battle that forced him to retreat from public life.

The former investigative journalist, whose fearless reporting once dominated Kenya’s media landscape, disclosed on Saturday that he had been fighting for his life following a devastating knee injury.

The ordeal began in December 2024 during what should have been a routine sporting event at the East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa. What appeared to be a simple athletic injury quickly transformed into a life-threatening medical emergency that would see Ali undergo three major surgical procedures across two countries.

“I have been very quiet for the last nine months; others think I have run away from politics, and others think I am afraid to pick a side,” Ali explained during his first public appearance since the injury. “When you are sick, other things can wait; my health comes first. I was very sick; I almost lost my life.”

The severity of his condition required specialized medical intervention that took him from Kenyan hospitals to India for advanced treatment. Two surgeries were performed locally, but the complexity of his injuries necessitated a third procedure in India, where he could access more specialized orthopedic care.

Ali’s decision to prioritize his health over political engagement reflected the gravity of his situation. Throughout his recovery period, he maintained that mixing politics with his medical battle would have been inappropriate and potentially detrimental to both his health and his ability to serve effectively.

The road to recovery has been slow and methodical. Ali has only recently begun walking again, marking a significant milestone in his rehabilitation journey. His medical team has outlined a cautious timeline, with full recovery expected within four to six months. “I have started walking. It will take me another four months or six to fully recover. Hopefully by December, I will be able to run,” he shared with characteristic optimism.

During his absence, Ali’s silence had generated considerable speculation within Kenya’s political circles. As someone known for his outspoken nature and investigative background, his withdrawal from public discourse was particularly conspicuous during a period of significant political developments. His revelation puts to rest rumors about political motivations behind his silence and reframes his absence as a necessary medical hiatus.

Despite the personal challenges, Ali emphasized that his commitment to his constituents never wavered. While he suspended public political activities, his office continued operating normally, ensuring that essential services to Nyali residents were maintained throughout his recovery period.

The MP’s candid revelation about his near-death experience serves as a powerful reminder of the human vulnerabilities that exist behind public personas. His decision to speak openly about his health struggles demonstrates both courage and a recognition that transparency with constituents is essential, even when discussing deeply personal matters.

As Ali continues his gradual return to full mobility, his story stands as a testament to resilience and the importance of prioritizing health over political ambitions. His experience also highlights the reality that even the most prominent public figures are not immune to life’s unexpected challenges, and that sometimes the most courageous political act is knowing when to step back and focus on personal well-being.
