Kindiki Rebukes ODM’s Deputy President Bid and Shuts Down Oburu Odinga’s Ambitions

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has issued a measured but firm response to ODM’s Deputy President Bid, signaling that he remains unshaken by the party’s renewed ambitions. Speaking during an impromptu inspection of the Maragwa–Ichagaki–Gamburi road on February 14, Kindiki dismissed Oburu Odinga’s public declaration of interest in the deputy presidency. Describing himself as a “master of politics,” the Deputy President indicated he would address the matter fully when the timing is appropriate.

His remarks highlight rising tensions between Kenya Kwanza leaders and factions within ODM allied to the government. Kindiki’s statement is both subtle and strategic. While he did not attack ODM directly, his words conveyed confidence and authority.

He urged Kenyans not to be unsettled by political chatter, emphasizing that decisions and statements of consequence are delivered at the right time. This approach demonstrates his awareness of the high-stakes political environment surrounding the deputy presidency and coalition dynamics.

ODM’s Deputy President Bid Sparks Political Debate

ODM’s Deputy President Bid gained attention during the party’s delegates’ meeting in Mombasa on February 12. At the gathering, Oburu Odinga appeared to reverse his earlier position. Previously, he had expressed no objection to Kindiki holding the deputy presidency. However, he now publicly asserted that his party intended to contest the position.

“That deputy president seat is what we are targeting very strongly,” Oburu said. The remarks sent shockwaves through political circles and prompted renewed debate about the stability of the broad-based government coalition.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga reinforced ODM’s evolving stance during a Linda Ground tour. She encouraged party members to defend the party’s identity and maintain relevance in government, signaling that ODM seeks tangible gains from coalition politics rather than merely symbolic influence.

The renewed focus on the deputy presidency has underscored the delicate balance within the Kenya Kwanza–ODM alliance. While cooperation exists, political ambitions and party loyalties continue to create friction.

Oburu Odinga Intensifies Political Push

Oburu Odinga’s insistence on pursuing the deputy presidency reflects a calculated political strategy. By targeting the second-highest office, he seeks to strengthen ODM’s position within the coalition and reassure party supporters that the party can secure influence in government.

Observers note that ODM’s renewed ambitions also coincide with efforts to redefine its role within the coalition. The party has signaled a departure from strict opposition tactics, aiming instead to leverage its presence in government for strategic gains. This move, however, risks igniting conflict with Kenya Kwanza leaders who hold key positions and view the deputy presidency as non-negotiable.

Kindiki Allies Reject ODM’s Claims

While Kindiki maintained a measured tone, his allies delivered sharper criticism. Maragua MP Mary Wathera questioned ODM’s timing and credibility. She reminded the public that the coalition already occupies the number two position and questioned whether ODM expects it to be surrendered.

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki dismissed ODM’s ambitions as unrealistic, pointing to internal divisions within the party, including dissenting voices associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Njuki emphasized that the deputy presidency remains a secured position for Kenya Kwanza and is not subject to negotiation.

The strong pushback underscores the resolve of Kenya Kwanza leaders to defend the coalition’s political arrangements. They argue that the presidency and deputy presidency were determined by electoral mandate and cannot be compromised for political expediency.

Kindiki’s restraint, combined with his allies’ assertiveness, reflects a dual strategy. He projects patience and mastery of political timing while ensuring his team signals the coalition’s unwillingness to yield power. This approach allows him to control the narrative without escalating tensions unnecessarily.

As ODM continues to assert its ambitions, the coming months will test both the durability of the coalition and Kindiki’s political acumen. His measured response and strategic silence indicate he is carefully evaluating when to escalate the issue.
