Kenya Rejects Gachagua’s Claims Linking President Ruto to Minnesota Fraud Funds

Kenya’s political landscape was rocked over the weekend when Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), accused President William Ruto and his administration of benefiting from funds allegedly stolen in the Minnesota fraud case.

Speaking at a church service in Githunguri Constituency, Gachagua called for U.S. intervention, claiming part of the stolen funds had been diverted to political campaigns and private projects in Kenya. The government swiftly rejected the claims, warning that seeking foreign involvement in domestic politics could have serious diplomatic repercussions.

Government Responds Firmly to Minnesota Fraud Funds Allegations

The Kenyan government, through Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui, issued a strong rebuttal to Gachagua’s accusations on Monday, January 5. Kinyanjui emphasized that the allegations were baseless and politically motivated, pointing out that Gachagua was previously President Ruto’s running mate—a detail that raises questions about the credibility and timing of his claims.

Kinyanjui described the attempt to involve foreign powers in Kenya’s internal affairs as reckless. He argued that invoking U.S. authorities to investigate the nation’s leadership could damage Kenya’s international standing and undermine diplomatic relations. According to him, political rivalries should not be allowed to compromise issues of global significance.

“Seeking foreign intervention against one’s own country for personal political gain is regressive and dangerous. This type of politics reflects greed and a lack of understanding of potential consequences,” Kinyanjui said during a press briefing. He further stressed that investigations into financial crimes fall under the mandate of relevant Kenyan authorities and should not be politicized.

Allegations Include Use of Minnesota Fraud Funds for Private Ventures

Gachagua, during his church address, alleged that a portion of the Minnesota fraud funds had been diverted to finance political campaigns and to construct a shopping mall in Eastleigh. He claimed that the mall’s owner is closely associated with the President, suggesting that the stolen funds were improperly invested in private ventures instead of being used for intended humanitarian purposes.

“That money was meant to help people living with disabilities. It was stolen, brought to Kenya, and invested in land, houses, and a mall,” Gachagua asserted. His allegations imply that the funds were misappropriated in a manner that benefits private interests while undermining public welfare.

The claims, however, have yet to be substantiated with evidence. Government officials maintain that all financial flows linked to international fraud investigations are handled under strict oversight, and no proof has been provided linking the president or his administration to the Minnesota funds.

Call for U.S. Intervention Draws Sharp Criticism

In a dramatic appeal, Gachagua called on U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene directly, urging authorities to fast-track the extradition of suspects linked to the alleged fraud, drawing parallels with the extradition of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to the United States. He urged bypassing the legal process entirely to prosecute those allegedly involved in diverting the funds.

The government strongly criticized this approach. CS Kinyanjui described it as dangerous, noting that inviting foreign powers to interfere in Kenya’s domestic politics could have far-reaching consequences. He warned that such moves could erode national sovereignty and strain relations with international partners, emphasizing that the country’s leadership cannot condone or support political maneuvering that risks diplomatic fallout.

Political Tensions Underlying Minnesota Fraud Funds Dispute

The controversy over the Minnesota fraud funds underscores the heightened political tension in Kenya, particularly among leaders with past alliances that have since fractured. Observers note that Gachagua’s claims may be motivated by personal political agendas rather than substantiated evidence.

Political analysts have highlighted the risks of conflating political rivalry with serious financial and diplomatic matters. They warn that such claims, especially when amplified in public forums or to foreign authorities, could create confusion, mistrust, and potentially impact Kenya’s reputation abroad.

Meanwhile, the government has indicated that all matters regarding investigations into international fraud are handled by competent authorities, and that any attempt to politicize such investigations is irresponsible. Kinyanjui’s statement reiterated that public leaders must prioritize national interests over partisan disputes.

As this dispute unfolds, Kenyan citizens and international observers are watching closely, weighing the seriousness of Gachagua’s allegations against the government’s firm dismissal. The Minnesota fraud funds claims have thrust the issue of accountability, governance, and political integrity into the spotlight, highlighting the delicate balance between domestic politics and international diplomacy.
